Ages ago people usually bought applications like MS Money to manage their accounts but since MS Money 2007 I pretty much lost interest on these types of applications. “But wait!”… Now there are many online options to choose from. “OMG are you kidding me?, Financial information on the Web?” Yes I know most people do not trust the web for this sort of task but there is a new option. DARPA Develops Brain Chemical to Replace Sleep – Amazing is just the beginning, It was discovered that the deficiency of “Orexin A” (yes i know it sounds like some Sci-Fi character) causes narcolepsy in some people. Then the next step was to introduce this chemical into people to see what happened and voila, Sleep Gone! Yes as easy as that this nasal spray takes away the symptoms of sleep and it produces no effect on already awake people (because it is not an stimulant as caffeine). The future apparently will be like your light switch… one pill to go to sleep and another to wake up.

No resolutions just hope… That is what i have for this new year. I hope that this will be a year of changes and growth (both professionally and personally). There will be many trials and tribulations but at the end of the shift the boat will keep on floating and with a new direction.
This isn’t just for me i wish everybody could feel the warmth this new year gives me. I want for everybody better lives and less suffering; just drop everything and start walking. Grab your love ones with you and (as Johny Walker said: “Keep Walking” don’t look back.
I know that 52 weeks from today we will all be in a better place and with a confidence in ourselves that nothing will stop us in the future years. This may be a year of silence and deep observation. We are going to have to look inside ourselves ans realize what we are made of. Some may not like what they see, as self analysis if absolute and true. So if you find you are a worst person than you thought or if you feel like there is something holding you from being you don’t be sad be happy you know this now and not years later alone in a dark room. Others may find they are truly the honest and great persons they are, but then why do horrible things happen to you? No one can tell you an absolute truth but you must know that this is not meant to break but to heal.
Well no more… I sincerely hope for the best (and fear for the worst) for all of us. It doesn’t matter if you know me or don’t just know that this year is a new beginning for all of us… (“Stop procrastinating with your life”)

We loved RUBY on Rails but now BBC has implemented something new Perl on Rails.
“What we wanted was a dynamic publishing solution – in other words the
ability to render webpages on the fly, when a user requests them. Now
obviously there are already a number of existing frameworks out there
that provide the sort of functionality that we needed, however none
that provided the functionality and that could be run on the BBC
servers. So we (the Audio and Music bit of Future Media and Technology
- but more specifically Paul, Duncan, Michael and Jamie) embarked on
building a Model-view-controller (MVC) framework in Perl.”
That pretty much sums it up. This is another example of how the “Field of Dreams” quote works… you know the “if you build it they will come”. We’ll if you can’t find anything done that works for you build it; great inspiration.
An example of Perl on Rails running is /programmes if you don’t understand the beauty of it you probably don’t understand it at all, its all about webpages on-the-fly.

Yes I’m officially calling them Spyuses. Its a mix between spyware and viruses, so it’s a spyrus. They are as annoying as both of them combined. The new trend is to infect in anyway possible by new means like cursors in web pages or even when you “mouse-over” some link. Not just that they have jump into MSN messenger and annoyed the hell out of many of us. “No I do not want to see your pictures” if you know what this message means, then you must have a few friends on MSN messenger that have been infected by the new virus. I recently became a ware of a virus that exploited a flaw found in new U3 enabled USB devices.
A few months back i developed a Rogue USB, exploiting the Autorun feature from these devices. It was able to get passwords from IE/Mozilla, MSN, MSN Logs, Hardware info and much more. It was merely a project for a class i was taking and the repercussions were incredible. Well now a few months later I myself found a little program on my USB exploiting this same flaw in USB devices.
It was called RavMon.exe and along with a Autorun.inf file it infected every drive on the computer including C:\ with itself and allocated a key on the registry to startup every time. Even if you were able to do a System Restore it will stay on your system. This is a nasty as hell annoyance but it is very dangerous, we are not talking about pop-ups now its a full on warfare with these pesky little programs.
If you suspect this virus infection or the MSN Re-Sender please download AVG free edition, and for more security run their Anti Rootkit checker for the ones you may have and don’t even know it yet.

It’s written by Mr. Excel himself and it covers almost everything. Seriously just keep it somewhere and if you like it and need it you can buy a hard copy but for now I’ll stick to the free one. The new era… No more passwords no more “Forgot your Password”. This is the new era of security on the net. I’m happy that WordPress.com is already using it. But what is OpenID, it is a new way of authorizing users into sites. Let’s say you wanna login to paypal, OpenID certifies to paypal as a third-party that you really are who you say you are. This eliminates the need for hundreds of passwords. Also integration with crypto-keys (portable sequence changing keychains) is available. For more info check out OpenID homepage.

This was sent to me from a friend and it caught me by surprise. Eye-Fi Wireless SD Card – This is one of (in my opinion) best devices of 2007. This is a SD card that goes into your camera and wirelessly (Wi-Fi not BT) will upload the pictures taken directly to your computer or even to Facebook and flickr. It is $99 for 2GB but it is so woth it and who know maybe it can be used for many more things that have an SD slot. So, check it out. (Yahoo review)

As requested by a friend here is a link to a small utility program. It is NOTEPAD++ is Notepad on steroids. It allows to edit text and so much more. It has some languages integrated on it very useful for all the programers that use Notepad for easy viewing now you can do the same with syntax highlighting. Some of the languages are: C, C++, Java, C#, XML, HTML, PHP, CSS and more. Hope you like it.

For the people who say “Ahh launchy is just a cheap copy of Quicksilver in MAC’s”. You are absolutely RIGHT! It is a quick fix for those used to that usefulness and quick access of quicksilver the only difference is that it is for Windows. If you own a MAC you know what this does and how essential it is. For those who don’t go to the site (launchy.net) download it and give a try if you like you can even set up your own scripts and programs for it (the Runny plugin is a godsend), also this makes searching even easier.
For example let’s say you wanna search in Google, you can open Launchy (ALT+SPACE) and use the Runny plugin, now add a command:
name: Google
command: http://google.com/search?q=$1+$2+$2+$4+$5+$6+$7
Usage: Google|abe diaz com (where | means TAB)
It will launch your browser and search on google with what ever parameters you put. Have fun if you want examples of some scripts and techniques email me.
